Rockport, Penobscot – Maine’s midcoast retreat

Penobscot Bay is a great area for your vacation on the east coast. Dotted with islands and inlets, it is sheltered from the Atlantic rollers and winds and is made up of a few tiny communities, reliant on the visitors and the fishing of this fabulous mid-Maine, rocky shored landscape. Rockport is one of the most pleasant and smallest of the towns of Penobscot, centred around a very pretty harbour.

Rockport, Penobscot – Maines midcoast retreat 1

Penobscot Bay was formed in the Holocene geological era, about eleven millennia ago. The sea level was lower and glaciation was in full swing, in this last major ice age. At this time, the region was a canyon with islands instead of mountains. The complex forces of glaciers and erosion have combined to carve out an intricate series of inlets and cliffs, islands and channels. You could spend days kayaking or sailing amongst the eleven islands, or heading up river. The scenery, with trees crowning the rocky coastline, is every changing and stunning.

Rockport, Penobscot – Maines midcoast retreat 2

Rockport is only two miles around a headland from the more touristy, larger Camden. So you’ve got the best of all worlds: peace and quiet in a small community, but access to more shops and services just a few minutes drive away. Centered around the harbour, the small winding streets are home to under a thousand families, many of whom rent out their lovely houses to summer visitors. One of America’s prettiest towns, according to Forbes, Rockport remains something of a hidden gem – a place of artists and anglers, small cafés and bistros. Wander among the galleries and watch the boats bob up and down on the water. Enjoy the history and culture of such a gorgeous New England coastal retreat.

Rockport, Penobscot – Maines midcoast retreat 3

This area of Maine is probably best suited to the mature couple, seeking peace and quiet, wanting to mooch around the historical streets and soak up the atmosphere. There are many simply pleasures to enjoy, whether fishing or hiking, watching the world go by from a harbour side restaurant or spotting the birds that frequent these Atlantic shores. You certainly wont be overrun by tourists or have your conversations drowned by amusement arcades or booming nightclub music. Instead, you’re more likely to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves, or hear the call of the birds. Canada geese, sea ducks, loons and grebes come here to fish or on their long journeys, enjoying the rich waters.

When you want to stretch those legs and enjoy the views, there are plenty of good hikes to be had, from easy to more strenuous. Head from the limestone quarry up through the public gardens, passing several of the historic lime kilns on country roads. Only three miles long, this is a village walk. If you want to head further afield, there are six good hikes from neighbouring Camden, ranging from under two miles to over five. Many take you up Mount Megunticook, to afford wonderful views of the bay and out to sea. In Camden Hills State Park, at the campsite, you can take two routes up to the summit, one slightly steeper than the other. It’s only 419 metres high, but the lookouts are awesome … and sometimes it feels a lot more than 419 metres!

There’s no hurry to do much of anything, however. You can simply relax and read under the sun. Admire the sunsets, or cast a lazy line into the water. Let the selection of good restaurants prepare you delicious fresh seafood. Take your time and put your life on idle for a couple of weeks.

Car Rental tips in foreign countries

Car Rental tips in foreign countriesIt is impossible to travel with your own car when you move out of the country. The rules and regulations of different countries may not allow you to run your own car on the streets of that particular country.  They have put up to curb security, that’s why you are not allowed to use your own vehicle. People who travel in foreign countries look for alternative methods and in addition to it, the arrangements they are looking for must be well merged to ensure that there are no last minute disappointments.

One must ensure the services provided by the car rental company before you pay them for the car rental services. One must ensure that the company they have chosen is the right one and they must get the car when they arrive at the airport. These measures must be catered to fulfill one’s needs. Therefore, it is important to follow the set of instructions while renting a car in a foreign country

Ensure Driving License: Make sure the car you are renting has a licensed driver with having international driving license. Contact local authorities to make a check on these things. International as well as his own license in required at the time of driving. There are some countries that permit the driving license of other countries like American licenses are permitted to use their license in Western Europe but not in any other countries. Also, contact the travel agency before moving and they must have all the dates for the intended trip with exact location where you want to roam and drive the car.

Reservation/Cancellations: The car rental companies in US have European duplicate copies that makes easy for most of the users. The users can easily make reservations and cancel those reservations as well with the help of these car rental agencies.  The rental plans are also available according to the budget of every person. Include the model you are going to choose eth particular type of model, size and dates for using the car. Also confirm the pick and drop facilities all the time.

Pick and Drop Facilities: Car rental (hyra bil) companies also provide their customers with drop off facilities from different locations. This is only call per ask facility and have special rates thus before you move, you must confirm about the rates before you agree on anything. There are also options available such as payments in installments, payments after the trip and payment in cash. Also the payments options are provided to pay half cash before the trip and half after the trip.

Different countries have different street signs and also have driving laws therefore it is important to study the rules of that particular country you are visiting. Make sure that the automobile insurance policies do not come along with any restrictions or limitations for driving in different countries. Also learn some of the common used words in foreign countries to get familiar with the traffic rules.

Arizona: Could this be your most relaxing holiday yet?

Grand canyon arizona

Okay, there’s little doubt that for many, seeing the Grand Canyon in all its majesty is worth visiting Arizona alone. For some it’s the only stop to make. And who am I to argue? It is breathtaking, after all. If you’re lucky enough to be travelling through Arizona, there are a good number of places that are worthwhile seeing. If you’re keen to turn a great trip into a truly memorable one on the other hand, the suggestions below may just have you in a Zen-like state before you can say Lake Powell!

Grand Canyon

This seemingly endless chasm, carved by the Colorado River, is the most obvious of attractions and arguably Arizona’s biggest drawcard. Just ask the five million people who flock to see it each year! The Grand Canyon has earned its place on the illustrious Seven Wonders of the World list, and for good reason: it’s awe-inspiring.

There’s so much about this place that can be said, so let’s start with the obvious. It’s big. And I mean HUGE. At 1.6 km deep, you can drive a car off the ledge (please don’t) and count to twenty before it would land!

The South Rim is the most popular and accessible area to view the canyon from, with various positions that overlook Hermits Rest, Desert View and Grand Canyon Village. This section is open all year round, and is your best bet for a decent gander – especially if you’re travelling by car.

For hikers, the Grand Canyon is a playground, with multiple trails that cater for casual sightseers and seasoned hikers alike. For those feeling adventurous, you can hike down to the valley floor but be warned – it’s quite a distance and it’s not for the faint-hearted. If you are determined to make the trek, be sure to play it safe and take the necessary precautions. Above all, take plenty of liquid.

Lake Powell

As featured on BBC’s “Stephen Fry in America”, this stunning attraction, simply put, is one of the most mind-bogglingly beautiful places you will find anywhere. It’s no understatement to say that photos honestly do not do this place justice, and that you really have to see this place in the flesh to appreciate its splendour.

Connecting the border between Arizona and Utah, Lake Powell is the second largest man-made reservoir in the US, now one unbeatable houseboating destination. You’d be forgiven for thinking this breathtaking spot has existed since the dawn of time, but in fact the lake was only formed in 1963. Amazing! Not only that, but it wasn’t until 1980 that Lake Powell reached “full pool”.

The best way to take in the landscape as you’ve probably guessed, is by boat. There are endless rock formations and changing landscapes to explore, thanks to the many canyons that straddle the lake. Gently gliding down the calm waters is almost a spiritual experience, and if you had any troubles niggling at your mind before hand, you certainly won’t now.

While there’s nothing even close to a ‘dull’ location on the lake, perhaps the most popular is the “Cathedral in the Desert” – a sandstone chamber that towers some 1000’ above you. You can take a small boat up to this spot and take a short walk to the chamber. Bring your camera…because unless you’re doing something wrong, you should be able to get a shot worthy of National Geographic. It’s THAT photogenic!

Madera Canyon

Like watching birds? Good. Because this spot is admired by the “packed lunch and binoculars” type of folk who flock to this location year round. If at first this sounds like something best left for the tour bus crowd, then think again, because this canyon, nestled within the Coronado National Forest, boasts superb picnic areas and hiking trails amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Santa Rita Mountains, south of Tucson. In other words, this is nature at its best, and has enough variety to appeal to everyone.

It’s not just about the birds. Really! There’s a Noah’s Ark of wildlife on display at Madera Canyon, from deer to whiskered screech owls. But beyond that, it’s just one heck of a place to relax and take in the sights and sounds.

This is but a brief glimpse into the rich tapestry that is Arizona, but these three attractions will have you well on your way to a holiday you’ll never forget. If you’re keen on seeing this mystical place for yourself, head on over to Cheap Flights and see if you can find yourself a  deal on airfares. If there’s a bucket list of things to see before you shuffle off this mortal coil, Arizona has to be one of them.

Cheaper and comfortable alternatives to the hotels while travelling

Cheaper and comfortable alternatives to the hotels while travellingIf you are planning to take a trip and is concerned with the sky rocketing prices of the hotel rooms then read ahead to be surprised with the alternative cheaper accommodation choices. When all you need the hotel room for is to sleep at nights, then paying for the hotel amenities is wastage of money which can be used to extend the trip for longer. Being aware and smart about the choices you make is the key to stay in the travelling budget. On the similar note, here are some alternatives below that will assure you a comfortable, clean and affordable place irrespective of the place you are planning to travel.

  • Hostels : Look up at the websites that provide the booking of the hostel rooms. Enter the country, place and time and you’ll be provided with all the available choices. You can select between the shared dormitory rooms or a private den. These websites also include the reviews of the previous travelers who stayed there and you can select the rooms accordingly. Hostels are relatively cheaper than the hotel rooms and with the shared food court, you get the opportunity to meet fellow travelers and that might even lead to the possibility of a combined tour.
  • Home Swapping : This is one of the best options to enjoy the trip with free accommodation. You need to find someone who might be interested in visiting your country. Look at the accommodation he can provide you with and choose accordingly as per your requirement and expectations. This does not just cut down the accommodation charges but also gives you a first hand experience with the local lifestyle of the country you are travelling in.
  • Couch surfing : If you are lucky enough to have friends scattered throughout the globe then this option would prove to be pocket friendly for you. However, keep in mind that you do not interfere with your friend’s daily routine and manage to travel on your own. It would be best to look up your contacts and find another place to stay in within one week. This time period is suitable enough for you to search for a budget friendly accommodation without being a burden to your friend.
  •  Voluntary jobs : This is one of the most suitable options for you if the accommodation cost of the country you’ll be visiting is high. There are many charity organizations that send people over seas for the voluntary services. You can choose between the fields such as teaching, engineering, medicine as per your forte. But at the same time it should be kept in mind that these services would require and consume your maximum time, so go for this option only if you have genuine interest in the concern field. If you are planning and looking forward to relaxing on the beach or hiking and the hotel rates of the place are relatively cheaper then it would be better to avoid this option.
  • Book an apartment : This is another money saving option. Look up at the apartments that are up for the rentals in the country you are planning to visit.
